About

The Maker

Hi, I’m Sheila the brains and hands behind Area Effects! I’m a Canuck living in the USA, with my husband and our two cats.

Like many other makers, I came to the craft from playing Dungeons and Dragons. I started with live play shows (Bidet, Critters!) then eventually made it to the table once I discovered I had friends who played…in real life!

Of course, the algorithms being what they are, and me being a crafty person, I was also pointed towards TTRPG accessory making videos and accounts. So, after obsessing over countless hours of how-to videos and dice making social media accounts, I finally put pressure to the pot in 2023 and quickly fell in love with this craft.

Beyond the workbench, I’m a forever DM, and a full-time Bard working as classical singer and graphic designer.

The dice

All the dice are handmade by me using 2-part epoxy resin and a variety of colourants and inclusions.

Molds are made by me using masters printed by Cleric’s Components.

Once hardened, dice are hand-sanded, polished and painted.

The Geeky Goods

Not content to leave it at dice, and with a background in graphic design, Area Effects also makes stickers, mugs, coasters and other TTRPG-adjacent goodies!

On Storytelling

"Why do we tell stories? To try to make sense of a world that can be terrifying and enormous."
Brennen Lee Mulligan
Game Master

My ultimate goal here at Area Effects is to help humans tell stories. Tabletop Rollplaying Games have an enormous capacity to evoke real emotions and give us a place to play within them.

Dealing the killing blow, saving an ally, retrieving the artifact, solving the puzzle: while these acts may be in our imaginations, the feelings they evoke are real and speak to what it is to be human.

We play because its fun. Because it brings us joy and brings us closer together.
